Showcase Favorite Photos with Canvas Prints

We all enjoy having photos as part of our décor, as happy memories always put a smile on our faces. Most people have a frame or two hanging with family pictures in the living room or sitting on the nightstand. I love my décor, and for me, it is incomplete without lots of photographs. So, when I redecorated my living room a couple of years back, my favorite photos had to be a big part of it. However, many pictures are randomly chosen and placed without too much thought. It’s a tricky equation, but you need to put in some creativity to find the right balance.

The living room is where everyone in the family spends the most time, and should be a welcoming space. Decorating is hard work, but it’s fun nonetheless. I’ll share some of my ideas to make my favorite pictures a big part of my living room’s décor.

Choose Your Favorite Photos

The process began with selecting my favorite pictures. I thought this would take a few minutes, but it took several hours. I liked so many pictures, but there was not enough room to accommodate them all. One good tip is to try and select photos from different occasions and locations. Unless you want a specific theme for your décor, don’t add too many pictures of the same event. For example, don’t hang multiple photos from your wedding reception unless that is the main theme you wish to follow.

Categorize Your Snaps

Once I selected all my photos, I categorized them based on their attributes. There were many categories such as us as a couple, family, friends, nature, etc. They were sub-categorized based on indoor and outdoor locations, events, when the photos were taken, etc. It is a challenging task, but it helped me in the final placement of the photos in the different areas of the living room. I ended up knowing which photos needed to be presented more prominently than others.

Ideas for Using Photos in the Living Room

Once I had the photos to add in my living room, the next step was to make them a part of the décor. The trickiest part is to create a balance in terms of how the images look with the rest of the interior. For me, selecting how to put the photos up was another challenge.I decided to use the more traditional options while adding modern twists. It gave me an excellent opportunity to bring out my creative side and make my living room look fabulous.

1. Experiment with Canvas Prints

Canvas prints are excellent for photos. When I checked out options for putting pictures on my walls, they appeared more appealing than the traditional photo frames. They offered better value in terms of flexibility of options, reliability, and cost. There are many options within canvas prints that helped me make my décor enjoyable. Since I have young kids at home, I needed an option that could survive a soccer ball or an action figure coming in its way. At the same time, affordable canvas prints allowed me to add more photos without breaking the bank.

Single or Split Canvas?

I was intrigued by the number of sizes available in canvases. I used just about all of those options, be it smaller, larger, or split canvases. I used large single canvases for photos from major life events, while smaller ones were grouped randomly to share sweet memories with friends and family. I used the split canvas on one of the living room walls with the most beautiful sunset photo ever. The three canvases combined to show the best picture I have ever taken.

Bonus Tip: Canvases are ideal if your walls are light-colored. My walls were white, so the canvases fitted in perfectly. Collage Canvases Canvas collages helped me group pictures from my favorite vacations. I was able to mix up photos from several holidays into a single collage. It is somewhat random, but the result looks fantastic.

Bonus Tip: Collages are an excellent option for mixing photos taken horizontally and vertically. They complement each other well and don’t look awkward.

2. Table Frames are Fantastic

Hanging frames on the walls is quite the norm. However, they can take a lot of space and add a heavy feel to the décor. Instead, I utilized tabletop frames for my photos. You can benefit from the digital frames though I’m more old school and decided to go with the more traditional ones. I ensured that frames matched the colors in the décor.

Try DIY Frames

Buying new frames is a straightforward option. But, if you have some time at hand, why not make your own frames? I looked up some videos online and came up with relatively unique ideas. I used different woods for the frames, and they looked pretty fantastic. I saved the most intimate of photos for the frames.

Or Refurbish Old Ones

Another option is to refurbish old frames. I got a few for next to nothing from a thrift store. There were some unusual frames that could also serve the purpose of a decoration piece. I had to clean the rust on the metal ones and add some color and polish to the wooden ones. I also added some colors to the frames and ended up with some abstract art on them.

Bonus Tip: You do not need to make frames from scratch. You can make some modifications to store-bought frames.

3. How About Some Photo Cushions

Cushions are a must in a living room, and I utilized them for putting pictures of pets, my favorite buildings, and nature. The pets went on the sofa cushions while the rest were displayed as an alternative to the traditional floorc ushions. I even had some photos printed on throws, but they didn’t look well in the living room.

Bonus Tip: Adding photos on cushions is a practical idea but do not have fifty different pictures on your cushions in the living room. That will surely overwhelm every other aspect of the décor.

4. Photo Murals

I seriously considered a photo mural in my living room, but there wasn’t enough space on the walls. If you have a large living room, you can give it a try. Unless you’re an artist, you may need to benefit from the services of a professional, so it can cost a fair bit. You can also get them printed on vinyl sheets.

The Bottom Line

Decorating a living room and incorporating your photos into the plans is not an easy task. You have to carefully select the pictures and decide how you will put them on. I opted for canvases, picture frames, and cushions. You can always experiment with these options and bring up some of your own. As long as your photos do not overpower the décor and don’t look out of place, you can add as many as you like.
